Founders, Jerry Verbeck, Scott Smith, and Rick Thabet

C Squared is comprised of two funds invested in three companies and an IP holding company.

C Squared’s team is comprised of seasoned specialists, some of whom are directly involved in the management and growth of the fund’s portfolio companies. Others are responsible for developing the fund’s core technologies, while the remaining advise the firm in their areas of expertise.

Both of the funds that C Squared manages are privately held and privately financed.


Scott Smith

Scott Smith, Founder

Mr. Smith is a co-founder of C Squared and its portfolio companies. He is a co-inventor of FinaTech’s technology.

Mr. Smith was an early pioneer in structured finance on Wall Street, originating the first mixed-property commercial mortgage conduit and securing a billion-dollar line of credit from DLJ. Along with Mr. Verbeck, he developed the model for securitizing loans that is the cornerstone for mortgage-backed securities today.

Mr. Smith helped obtain and structure the financing for the first phase of President Nelson Mandela’s Redevelopment Program in South Africa, which provided affordable housing for some 11,000 families near Soweto, and paved the way to housing for many more families throughout the nation.

Mr. Smith is the author of A Tale of Two Economies, a book that develops the basis for a Congressional bill that would replace income taxes with a payments tax and balance the budget.


Jerry Verbeck

Jerry Verbeck, Founder

Mr. Verbeck is a co-founder of C Squared and its portfolio companies. He is a co-inventor of FinaTech’s technology.

Mr. Verbeck is a seasoned CFO and banking veteran.  Early in his career he pioneered the FNMA, FHLMC, and GNMA pass-through and electronic delivery system. As CFO of Christian Mutual Life, Mr. Verbeck was one of the first to use the newly legislated REMIC, structuring four REMIC offerings.

Later, Mr. Verbeck teamed up with Mr. Smith to structure the nation’s first mixed-property CRE mortgage pool, overseeing loan origination and underwriting, as well as the modeling needed to achieve investment grade ratings. Mr. Verbeck also managed the team that structured the financing for South Africa’s Redevelopment Program.


Rick Thabet

Rick Thabet, Founder

Mr. Thabet is a co-founder of C Squared, and serves on the board of MPT and Fathym.

Mr. Thabet has helped found numerous early stage companies, and is currently the founder and CEO of ThoraGenix Innovations, a firm that has invented and developed a highly successful advanced fusion matrix for rapid sternal healing that is used after open heart surgery.

Mr. Thabet brings over twenty years of entrepreneurial experience to C Squared. His expertise is in implementing strategic plans to drive enterprise value. Previously at Oratech, Mr. Thabet chaired the Sales Advisory Council and helped write the IDET procedure into policy. As a senior sales representative at Aesculap, he won the Pinnacle Award and Aesculap Sale Representative of the Year Award. Earlier in his career, Mr. Thabet was responsible for sales at Baxter International and financial research at Roulston and Company. He began his career as a pricing analyst at IBM, and won a national championship in rowing while at Ohio State University. 


Shannon Kendall

Shannon Kendall, Managing Member, Investor Relations

Mr. Kendall joined C Squared as a managing member in 2012. He oversees investor relations for the fund and helps manage business development and partner alliances for the fund’s portfolio companies. Mr. Kendall is a board member of MPT.

Mr. Kendall joined C Squared after 20 plus years in the medical field, where he drove enterprise value in both Fortune 500 companies and start-ups by bringing new products to market. He gained valuable experience in the medical field managing the complex processes associated with the implantable, capital equipment industry in the disposable Orthopedic and Neuro surgical markets. While in the medical industry, Shannon also managed and negotiated a number of joint ventures and strategic with multi-billion-dollar companies.

Previous to the medical industry, Mr. Kendall was a member of a capital investment team focused on the food and beverage markets, where he was responsible for capital fund management. In his spare time, Mr. Kendall enjoys flying RC airplanes and hiking the mountains in Arizona.


Christopher Smith

Mr. Smith joined C Squared at its inception and is a co-inventor of FinaTech’s IP. He assists the fund with IP development, licensing, asset protection, and legal documentation.

Mr. Smith is a graduate of Stanford, where he specialized in neuroscience and emerging technologies. He is the developer of many of FinaTech’s structured finance concepts, and helps to translate the cash and data flows inherent in FinaTech’s structures to computer work flows and computational analysis in the prosecution of C Squared’s patents. Mr. Smith also helps with FinaTech’s communications, go-to-market strategy, and brand development.


Kevin Howard

Mr. Howard is a co-founder of Massively Parallel, one of C Squared’s portfolio companies. He is the inventor of MPT’s technology and the developer of its patent portfolio. He is also a co-inventor of FinaTech’s IP and key member of FinaTech’s IP prosecution team.

Mr. Howard is a member of Mensa and a renowned computational expert with over forty patents to his name. He is a recipient of numerous DARPA grants and has developed some of the nation’s most advanced parallel processing technologies, Mr. Howard is recognized as a luminary in parallelization who specializes in optimizing compute technologies.


Jim Holt

Jim Holt, CEO of MPT, Fathym

Mr. Holt serves as the CEO for two of C Squared’s portfolio companies, MPT and Fathym.

Mr. Holt is a veteran of the technology world. He was the CEO of RF-Works, where he helped bring wi-fi to the world and spun Aironet out to Cisco. Later, Mr Holt led Acero, where he provided the computational support that helped crack the human genome. Mr. Holt gained experience in marketing enterprise software as the CMO of Computer Associates, and understands server scalability based on his leadership at Secant. Mr. Holt began his career at IBM, where he specialized in corporate intelligence and competing in the parallel processing space.


Glenn Allmendinger

Glenn Allmendinger, Advisor

Mr. Allmendinger advises C Squared on its portfolio companies. He is a board member of Fathym, where he advises the company on its role in industrial automation. Mr. Allmendinger has helped Fathym to establish a number of its key industry relationships.

Mr. Allmendinger is the President of Harbor Research, a premier consulting firm to the C-suite of Fortune 500 industrial automation and Industrial Internet-of-Things companies. He is the author of a number of seminal Harvard Business Review articles.


J. C. Boggs

J. C. Boggs, Advisor

Mr. Boggs is a Washington DC based partner at the prestigious law firm of King and Spalding. He is an innovator in the financial industry, having helped to establish the first commercial trust to hold a master account at the Federal Reserve.

Mr. Boggs advises FinaTech on regulatory and business development matters, where he has guided the firm through key meetings with the SEC. Mr. Boggs helped develop the fundamental principles behind FinaTech’s channel partnership program, and helped establish a number of FinaTech’s key industry relationships.


John Gustafson

John Gustafson, Advisor

Dr. Gustafson advises C Squared on MPT’s patent portfolio. He is a world renowned computer scientist known for his invention of Gustafson’s Law and the Unum number format and computational system. After leading the reconstruction of the Atanasoff–Berry computer (ABC), the first automatic electronic digital computer, Dr. Gustafson developed the world’s first working computer cluster, which ultimately became the foundation for cloud computing.

Dr. Gustafson is a former professor at National University of Singapore, and currently a Visiting Scholar at Arizona State University. He is the author of The End of Error: Unum Computing, a former Director at Intel Labs, where he oversaw some of their most futuristic technologies, and a former Senior Fellow and Chief Product Architect at AMD.
